Hello! My name is Aubrey and I’m a perfume enthusiast based in Seattle, Washington.
I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in Writing in 2013. I’ve worked in the literary arts and nonprofit worlds, and currently work in healthcare marketing and communications. My visual and mixed media artwork has been shown and sold in galleries in France and the United States.
My curiosity about the world of scent began when I picked up a book of perfume reviews. I realized how limited my own language for scent was, and felt determined to explore and expand my olfactory world.
I remember smelling two perfumes early on in my scent odyssey. I read their descriptions—“clove and cinnamon, flowers and woods,” “a summer slumber under a weeping willow… the herbaceous, acidulated accents of blackcurrant leaves and buds, and the floral intensity of rose”—and then I smelled them. Both smelled nondescript to me, a bland “perfume” smell. I was disappointed, but I set them aside and continued to try other perfumes. Months later, I returned to the two sample vials and tried again. The fragrances I experienced then were so different! How could I have ever thought that they smelled nondescript, or blandly “perfumey?” It was then that I realized that my own sense of smell might be developing. It felt like my nose was learning to read.
With Scent Appreciation, I am continuing on this odyssey of scent, and hopefully bringing others along with me. If you would like to get in touch, please email me at scentappreciation@gmail.com.
